The ineluctable lure of the American South is as much due to its history as it is to its people. Taking advantage of this fact as well as some great Gatlinburg vacation rentals will reward its participants with an exciting adventure, a wealth of knowledge and a lifetime of memories.

Gatlinburg is located on the eastern border of Tennessee, which places it close to many of the most famous spots of American Southern history. Here are just three of the best:

Colonial Williamsburg

Renowned for its accurate depiction of American colonial life, this living history museum is visited by over a million history buffs every year. This “city within a city” provides an incredible journey into history so that future generations may learn from the past.

Notable attractions include reconstructions of the Raleigh Tavern, the Capitol, the Governor’s Palace and most remarkably, the original Bruton Parish Church. Each of these structures has a tale to tell about the history of this remarkable town and the American South. More fun can be expected as you watch the blacksmiths; glass blowers, potters and other veteran artisans practice their craft just as they would have in the 18th century.

Charleston Old and Historic District

Just a few short hours away from the picturesque Gatlinburg vacation rentals, this beautiful and historically authentic city embraces all the charm and vibrancy of the American South. Divided in to two distinct parts, the French Quarter and the Navy Yard, Old Charleston will satisfy the intellectual curiosity of any history buff.

The French Quarter is typically serene with many cafes, “shoppes” and other traditional entertainments. It is an excellent place for couples and seniors to relax and enjoy each other’s company. The Charleston Navy Yard, on the other hand, requires a little more effort and stamina. Bring your kids and a whole lot of energy to explore this exciting piece of history.

A history of the American South would not be complete without a discussion of the land that made it so great and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is an excellent place to start the journey. Running along the border of Tennessee and North Carolina, with its main entrance in Gatlinburg, this national park is the first one funded by Federal rather than state funds and, as such, its heritage belongs to all Americans.

Encompassing over a half million acres, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is one of the largest protected, natural park, areas in the eastern United States. While hiking and sightseeing are its main attraction, the park is also known for some spectacular fishing. For the history buff, there are also several designated archaeological districts that record the history of the area from the 18th and 19th centuries.
