Notable attractions include reconstructions of the Raleigh Tavern, the Capitol, the Governor’s Palace and most remarkably, the original Bruton Parish Church. Each of these structures has a tale to tell about the history of this remarkable town and the American South. Divided in to two distinct parts, the French Quarter and the Navy Yard, Old Charleston will satisfy the intellectual curiosity of any history buff.
The French Quarter is typically serene with many cafes, “shoppes” and other traditional entertainments. It is an excellent place for couples and seniors to relax and enjoy each other’s company. A history of the American South would not be complete without a discussion of the land that made it so great and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is an excellent place to start the journey. Running along the border of Tennessee and North Carolina, with its main entrance in Gatlinburg, this national park is the first one funded by Federal rather than state funds and, as such, its heritage belongs to all Americans.
Encompassing over a half million acres, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is one of the largest protected, natural park, areas in the eastern United States. While hiking and sightseeing are its main attraction, the park is also known for some spectacular fishing. For the history buff, there are also several designated archaeological districts that record the history of the area from the 18th and 19th centuries.
