Skiing In Nassfeld: Choosing a ski resort to visit in Europe can be difficult with a mind boggling array of delights available. It is all too easy to opt for the best known premier resorts as little research is required but there are other choices which could provide a better all-round experience. The top resorts are costly, busy and may not have the most reliable snow so it can pay to look beyond them. One destination which is worthy of consideration is Nassfeld in Austria which may not have the high profile of Kitzbühel or Zermatt but which certainly has much to recommend it.

Nassfeld is situated in Carinthia, just a few hundred metres from the Italian border and only 45 minutes from Slovenia making it a useful destination if you are taking advantage of cheaper accommodation outside of Austria. The microclimate at the resort produces extremely reliable snow and a long skiing season with plenty of sunshine to enjoy. Whilst resorts just a few miles away are experiencing little snow and inclement weather, Nassfeld can be relied upon to serve up a great skiing experience.

Even during peak periods Nassfeld is not swamped with visitors and so queues for the lifts are minimal and the pistes pleasantly crowd free. There are 110 kilometres of runs to try with 11 km suitable for advanced skiers, 69 km for intermediates and 30 km for beginners. 30 lifts take you to the snow made up of 5 cable cars, 8 chair lifts and 17 drag lifts. The resort boasts a 7.6 km run and the longest floodlit piste in the Alps. The setting is spectacular and Nassfeld has won no fewer than 15 awards. There is plenty of accommodation with direct access to the slopes and additional fun to be had for snowboarders at the snow park.

Time Out

When you fancy a break from the pistes there are several restaurants and bars situated on the mountain with a variety of food available. The number of outlets and their generous size ensures that you can get served quickly but it is well worth lingering to take in the spectacular views across the valleys. A variety of fun activities including snow tubing, snow scooters and tobogganing are also available if you wish to try something new during your stay.

The Cost

Lift passes aren’t cheap but with few queues and long runs you certainly get great value for money by maximising your time on the snow. Nassfeld is the perfect choice is you are looking to extract the most fun for your cash and savings can be made by lodging in Northern Italy or Slovenia where it is also cheaper to hire your equipment and where there are some great skiwear packages available if you haven’t sorted out at your gear at home. The locals are well aware of the qualities of this fine resort but travellers from further afield may not be familiar with Nassfeld so do plan your trip before the secret gets out!
