About Alcatraz Island

Alcatraz Island has a long and somewhat muddy history. It was discovered by Juan Manual Ayala in 1775, and he named it after the pelican birds which inhabited the island. Up until the late 30s, it served as a powerful and prominent military prison which hosted some of the most devious and dangerous criminals caught.

In 1934, it was converted from a military outpost into a maximum security civilian prison, because of its precarious position and the lack of exit routes, it was deemed to be inescapable. it has held some of the most dangerous men in history including Al Capone.

It was closed in 1963, after an alleged escape. It lay abandoned and derelict until six years later, when some Native Americans occupied the island until 1971. The next year, the restoration process which has created one of the most illustrious tourist attractions in America today began.

Fronted by the National Park Association, it was turned into a resort for showing the present generation what used to happen and how we can avoid such lengths being needed again. Tours of the old prison are carried out daily by friendly staff and there are a variety of other gifts you can buy, as well as just look around and enjoy the scenery.

It makes for an intriguing day out and a very interesting way to see how things used to be handled. In years gone by, it has been one of the most popular tourist attractions and regularly has high visitor intakes as well as those who just come to see a truly unique scenery – the massive cliff-falls and natural habitats are well worth seeing.
