Jantar Mantar: Built during the reign of Rajput king Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II of Jaipur in AD 1724, this structure at the centre of a pleasant park in Connaught Place is an astronomical observatory. It is a collection of architectural astronomical instruments. It now lies obsolete surrounded by high rises. The objective behind the construction of Jantar Mantar was to predict the time and movements of the sun, moon and planets as well as to compile astronomical tables. A few of these purposes are now within the domain of astrology. The complex has a large sun dial built in AD 1727. Due to the high rises that dwarf the center, the sun dial is no longer as accurate as before. Jantar Mantar remains open for public from 8 a.m to 8 p.m. daily.
