Know your budget.
Before you can plan any type of vacation, you need to know how much you can afford to spend. Along with the price of traveling (airfare or gas) and accommodations, you’ll also need to consider money you’ll spend on attractions, food and souvenirs. Knowing how much you can afford will help you determine where you can go, how long you can stay, how you will get there and everything else about your trip.
Decide when you want to go.
Take a look at your schedule and determine when you can actually take a vacation. Is it something you can do right away, or will you planning a vacation for the future. Knowing when you can go will also allow you to determine how long you’ll be able to go for, and the season and the length can have a major impact on your vacation plans.
Decide where you want to go.
After you know when you can go and for how long, you can decide where exactly you want to go. If you’re traveling during the winter, you may want to go somewhere warm. You also want to keep in mind that if you’re traveling to another part of the world, the seasons may be different. For example, you may decide to go across the world in July only to find that it’s winter weather where you are. Make sure you do your research.
Decide where you want to stay.
Are you planning on staying with relatives, at a hotel or renting a house or condo? There are perks and downsides to each one, and it’s important that you decide where you want to stay. If you want to enjoy the hotel experience, you may want to opt to stay in a nicer hotel, but if you won’t be spending much time at the hotel except for sleeping, then you may want to stay somewhere more affordable.
Decide how you want to get there.
You have the option of traveling by plane, train, bus or driving yourself. It’s very important that you decide how exactly you want to travel. Driving yourself will cost less, but it will take longer to get there. Traveling by plane will put you where you want to go in a few hours, but it could be costly.
Check out travel sites.
Popular travel sites like Travelocity and Expedia can provide you with discounted travel arrangements to a variety of locations. You can use these sites to look up just hotels, just flights or combining everything into one package. These sites tend to have some great deals, so take a look around and see what you can find.
Visit with a travel agent.
If you don’t seem to be having any luck on your own, visit a travel agent and ask for their help. Not only will they work hard to put your trip together for you, but their connections with vendors can also save you a significant amount of money. Plus, since they’re knowledgeable on many destinations, they can recommend things to do while there or the best places to eat.
