10 Gourmet Meals Made Possible on a Camping Stove

Camping meals can sometimes be boring, but with a little forward planning, it’s very easy to create tasty and interesting dishes using just a camping stove. It’s helpful to take a few basics with you, such as salt, pepper, smoked paprika, olive oil, stock cubes and curry powder / paste, and but other fresh ingredients each day. The following meals can be made very easily on a camping stove.

Chicken slice
Before you travel, spread a tin of chicken in white sauce onto a sheet of ready-rolled puff pastry. Top with another sheet, sealing the edges. Brush with milk and cook in a hot oven. Freeze, so that it can be defrosting on your journey. Serve with a tin of new potatoes and salad (pre-prepared).

Tuna pasta
Boil pasta in salted water. Fry onions and garlic together, then add to the drained pasta, with a tin of tuna, a tin of sweetcorn and a dollop of sweet pickle. Stir well.

Sweet and sour pork

Thinly slice pork steaks, and fry with onions and garlic, and chopped vegetables (e.g. peppers, mushrooms etc.). Add a jar of ‘Sweet and Sour’ sauce. Serve with noodles.

Bean casserole

Fry onions and garlic together, then add chopped vegetables. Add two tins of beans (e.g. black-eyed beans). Add a tin of chopped tomatoes and season (including smoked paprika). Serve with crusty bread.

Curry and rice
Use tinned meat or chicken in white sauce and add curry powder or paste. Serve with rice – boil-in-the-bag makes washing up simple.

Spanish omelette
Chop a tin of ham, and a tin of new potatoes. Fry together onion and garlic, then add the ham, potatoes, and other chopped vegetables. Whisk two eggs per person, add seasoning and Italian herbs. Pour the eggs into the pan, and cook gently.

Mushroom risotto

Boil stock to cook risotto rice, plus a little extra. Soak dried mushrooms in a little stock for 15 minutes. Fry onions and garlic, then add chopped dried mushrooms, fresh mushrooms and the rice. Add the stock a little at a time, waiting until it’s absorbed before adding more, stirring continuously. Serve when the rice is soft.

Spaghetti bolognese
Use tinned mince or dried. Fry onions and garlic, add mince, tinned tomatoes, Italian herbs and seasoning. Serve with spaghetti.

Pasta stir fry
Cook pasta. Fry bacon, onions, garlic, and chopped vegetables. Add to drained pasta and stir well.

Sausage Creole
Fry sausages and chop into 2cm chunks. Fry onions, garlic, chopped vegetables, then add sausages, tinned tomatoes, kidney beans. Season (including smoked paprika), and serve with rice.
